From an early age, local man Ho Khanh used to spend weeks on trekking and exploring new paths through the jungles of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, in search of food and timber to earn some money as well as fulfilling daily necessities.

During a hunting mission in 1990, Ho Khanh stumbled across an opening in a limestone cliff and moved forward curiously to see the unseen. As he started moving towards it, he saw clouds around the entrance, and could hear the sounds of a river raging from somewhere inside the cave. He just couldn’t stop himself anymore and moved in to investigate. His curiosity to explore new places led him to the unknown paradise Vietnam always had. He lived there for few days and then decided to head back home. But, he forgot the way to home and kept wandering here and there. By the time he had returned to his home a few days later after being lost, he had forgotten its exact location of the cave and thought no more of it.

At the same time, Howard and Deb Limbert, two members of the British Cave Research Association (BCRA), were in Phong Nha to conduct exploratory cave expeditions in the area. After chatting with Ho Khanh one day, he mentioned that he had found a cave with clouds and a river inside. Howard and Deb were amazed and insisted Ho Khanh to try and rediscover the cave. After many failed attempts, they began to think this elusive cavern doesn’t want to be known and should be left unexplored.
