Snow falls in 'Sahara' for the first time in 37 years!

It’s not every day that it snows in the great Sahara Desert. Yeah! You are read it right, for the first time in 37 years in the Sahara desert a very rare occurrence of snowfall has been witnessed on December 19, 2016. In the Ain Sefra region of Algeria, which is fondly known as ‘The Gateway of desert’, the snow stayed for one day before it was melted by the scorching heat of the desert. Now last time that happened was in the year 1979 when the red hot Sahara desert was dotted with the white snowflakes.

Why did it happen?

There is no concrete proof as to why is snowed in Sahara. Algeria hosts part of the Atlas Mountain range, which extends some 2,500km across northwestern Africa. Snowfall in the Atlas is a common occurrence and other parts of the country also receive a high amount of rainfall. But, rainfall does not reach the sand dunes until this week when it not rained but snowed in Sahara. The Science hasn’t been able to answer to this miracle of nature! Whatever the theory may be, we must admit that global warming is showing its effects! Although, it is not a concrete proof that it snowed in Sahara due to the critical climate change, but it sure is one of the strongest reason for such an extraordinary event.

All that glitter is not gold

The snow in Sahara desert sure does look stunning. The contrast of white and red looks just like glitter. But, this is not a news that we should be happy about. No matter what the Science says, a big part of you also knows that climate change is going to give us some of the rare and extraordinary occurrences which may turn into a disaster if we keep on ignoring the environment. With the snow in Sahara, you cannot turn away your face from the bitter truth that global warming is at its height. Apparently, the snow in Sahara is due to the climate change which is the biggest problem of the world. Before the earth does any more miraculous disasters, we must stand up today and do our bit to save the environment.
