St, Francis Church in Fort Kochi, build in 1503 is the oldest European church in India. The church has seen various Europeans and Dutch invasion. But, what lies most interesting about this Church is its connection with Vasco Da Gama, the first Portuguese sailor to visit Kerala. On his third visit to Cochin, he died and his body was kept in this church for 14 years before it was finally taken back to Portugal. Santa Cruz Basilica in Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas of India. Build by Portuguese in 1505 the church was elevated to Cathedral by then Pope, Pope Paul IV and was titled to  Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984. The interesting fact about the Church is that it was spared by the Dutch while they were demolishing all the other Catholic edifices in India. Church has remained a beautiful attraction of the town ever since.
